Welcome to Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Havyakas 

Golden soil of Karnataka and several countries around the world, is home to a Smartha Brahmin community known as the ‘Havyaka’. With a rich history spanning over two thousand year. The Havyakas are renowned for their unique traditions, customs, cultural values, artistic talents, and a distinct mother tongue that closely resembles old Kannada- are unique and distinctive

Mayuravarma, the first king of Karnataka (reigned around 325–345 CE), brought back the elders of the Havyaka community from Ahichchatra in present-day Uttar Pradesh to Banavasi, the original homeland of the Havyakas, over 1,600 years ago. A few years later, these Ahichchatra Brahmins migrated to the region of present-day Uttara Kannada district at the request of King Chandrasena. Following him, his son King Lokaditya, impressed by their expertise in Vedic Homa, Havana aka Havya and ritual ceremonies for ancestors aka Kavya, gave these Brahmins the title "Havyaka"

Until the early 16th century CE, the Havyakas gradually expanded their settlements for livelihood across regions like Shimoga district, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, and Gokarna, extending southward up to Kundapura. From the early or mid-16th century onward, they also began to settle in Dakshina Kannada and parts of Kodagu (Coorg).

Before India’s independence, Havyakas from Uttara Kannada migrated to cities like Mumbai and Pune; those from Sagara and Shivamogga regions moved to Bengaluru and Mysuru; and people from Dakshina Kannada moved toward Chennai and the southern parts of Kerala. Today, Havyakas are spread across the globe and can be found living in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the Arab nations.

For several decades now, Havyakas have gradually made their way to Australia and New Zealand in search of new beginnings and better opportunities. Over time, they have embraced this beautiful land as their home.

In an effort to preserve our culture and values, to nurture our traditions, and to pass them on to the next generation, we are coming together as ANZ Havyaka. This community plays a vital role in keeping us connected and united across Australia and New Zealand. For the future generations of Australian and New Zealand Havyaka Community, we have deep desire and commitment to preserve our heritage—our language, customs, and values —through meaningful initiatives.

With that spirit, and on the joyous occasion of Ugadi as we welcome the new year Vishvavasu Samvatsara, the ANZ Havyaka website was officially launched on April 12, 2025, in Sydney.

ಸುವರ್ಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಶ್ವದ ಹಲವು ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿರುವ “ಹವ್ಯಕ” ಎನ್ನುವ ಒಂದು ಸ್ಮಾರ್ಥ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಸಮುದಾಯವಿದೆ. ಹವ್ಯಕರ ಆಚಾರ-ವಿಚಾರ, ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ, ಕಲಾಸಕ್ತಿ, ಹಳೆಗನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಹೋಲುವ ಅವರ ತಾಯ್ನುಡಿ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಹಾಗೂ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ. 

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪ್ರಥಮ ರಾಜನಾದ ಮಯೂರವರ್ಮ  ( ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. 325-345) ಸಾವಿರದ ಆರುನೂರು ವರುಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹವ್ಯಕರ ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನ ಉತ್ತರ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಅಹಿಚ್ಚತ್ರದಿಂದ, ಹವ್ಯಕರ ಸ್ವದೇಶವಾದ ಬನವಾಸಿಗೆ ಪುನಃ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಬಳಿಕ ಈ ಅಹಿಚ್ಛತ್ರೀಯ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರು ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ರಾಜ ಚಂಡಸೇನನ ಕೋರಿಕೆಯಂತೆ ವಲಸೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಚಂಡಸೇನನ ನಂತರ ಅವನ ಮಗನಾದ ರಾಜ ಲೋಕಾದಿತ್ಯನು ಹವ್ಯಾ ಕವ್ಯಾದಿ ಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರಾದ ಈ ಅಹಿಚ್ಚತ್ರ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರಿಗೆ “ಹವ್ಯಕ” ಎಂದ ನಾಮಧೇಯ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. 

ಹವ್ಯಕರು ಕ್ರಿ ಶ 16 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಆದಿ ವರೆಗೂ ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ, ಶಿರಸಿ, ಸಿದ್ದಾಪುರ, ಯಲ್ಲಾಪುರ ಹಾಗೂ ಗೋಕರ್ಣದಿಂದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಕುಂದಾಪುರದ ವರೆಗೂ ಜೀವನೋಪಾಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕ್ರಿ ಶ 16 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಆದಿ ಅಥವಾ ಮದ್ಯದ ನಂತರ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಡಿ, ಕೊಡಗಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಜೀವನ ಮಾಡಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. 

ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಹವ್ಯಕರು ಮುಂಬಯಿ, ಪುಣೆಗೆ; ಸಾಗರ, ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು, ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ; ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ದಿಂದ ಚೆನ್ನೈಗೆ, ಕೇರಳದ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕ್ಕೆ ವಲಸೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈಗ ಹವ್ಯಕರು ವಿಶ್ವದೆಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಹರಡಿ ಅಮೇರಿಕ, ಕೆನಡಾ, ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡ್, ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೇಲಿಯಾ, ನ್ಯೂ ಜೀಲ್ಯಾಂಡ್, ಸಿಂಗಾಪುರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಅರಬ್ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಹಲವಾರು ದಶಕಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದ ಹವ್ಯಕರು, ಹೊಸ ಜೀವನ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಅರಸಿ ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೇಲಿಯಾ ಮತ್ತು ನ್ಯೂಜಿಲ್ಯಾಂಡ್‌ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಮೇಣವಾಗಿ ಬಂದು ನೆಲಸಿದರು. ಹಾಗೂ ಸೊಗಸಾದ ಈ ಕರ್ಮಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರು. 

ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು, ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಂಪರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪೋಷಿಸಿ ಮುಂದಿನ ತಲೆಮಾರಿಗೆ ಹಸ್ತಾಂತರಿಸಲು, ನಾವು ANZ ಹವ್ಯಕ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಈ ಸಮ್ಮಿಲನ ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೇಲಿಯಾ ಮತ್ತು ನ್ಯೂಜಿಲೆಂಡ್ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹವ್ಯಕರನ್ನ ನಿರಂತರ ಸಂಧಿಸಲು, ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಹವ್ಯಕರನ್ನ ಒಗ್ಗೊಡಿಸಲು ಬಹುಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿನ ಸಂತತಿ – ಪೀಳಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಪರಂಪರೆ, ತಾಯ್ನುಡಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಆಚಾರ-ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಮಹತ್ತಾದ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವೂ ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾಗಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಆಸೆ ನಮ್ಮದು.

ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ, ಇದೇ ಯುಗಾದಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಆಚರಣೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷವನ್ನು (ವಿಶ್ವವಸು ಸಂವತ್ಸರ) ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸುವ ಸುಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ - ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 12, 2025 ರಂದು ಸಿಡ್ನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎ ಎನ್ ಜೆಡ್ ಹವ್ಯಕ ವೆಬ್ಸೈಟ್ ಅನ್ನು ಉದ್ಘಾಟನೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ.
